How to use an evacuation stair chair

Using the evacuation chair safely and correctly is essential in an emergency. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you unfold the chair, assist passenger transfer and manage stairway descent:

1. Unfolding the evac chair

  • First, unclip the passenger safety belt to unlock the chair tracks.
  • With one foot placed securely on the base of the chair for stability, grip the handle and pull the stair track assembly towards you.
  • Lift the seat frame upward until it connects and aligns with the track strut.

2. Passenger transfer

  • Hold the chair upright and steady with one foot placed on the base of the frame.
  • Assist the passenger into the seat and fasten the safety harness.
  • Gently press down with your foot to deploy the rear wheel assembly and transport the passenger to the top of the stairs.

3. Stairway descent

  • Once at the summit of the stairs, fold the rear wheel assembly back into place. Tilt the frame of the chair slightly until it reaches a stable position.
  • Hold both sides of the handle firmly and lean the stair chair back just enough to guide it over the edge of the top stair.
  • Ensure the tracks are fully in contact with the top two steps. The friction tracks are designed to grip securely at this point.
  • As the front wheels reach the bottom floor, shift your grip back to the side of the handle and tilt the chair forward.
  • When safely back on a level surface, release the rear wheel assembly for horizontal transfer.

FAQs

What is an evacuation stair chair?

An evacuation stair chair is a purpose-built solution used to assist individuals with limited mobility during emergency situations. It enables safe stairway transport when lifts are out of service or unsafe to use, helping carers move patients quickly without putting strain on themselves or the person being assisted.

How does an evac stair chair work?

The chair is designed to glide over stairs using a traction system that controls the speed of descent, offering a smooth and stable experience. On flat surfaces, the chair can be switched to a four-wheel mode, allowing for easy manoeuvring through hallways or toward exits. Built-in safety features help ensure the person in the chair remains secure throughout the evacuation process.

Why are evac stair chairs essential?

In emergencies, every second counts, especially for individuals who cannot use stairs unaided. Evac stair chairs are a practical, safe and respectful solution for emergency preparedness in multi-level buildings. They help support duty-of-care obligations and ensure that no one is left behind when quick action is required.
